United Airlines sees silver lining in supply-chain bottlenecks – San Francisco Business Times – San Francisco Business Times

United Airlines is enjoying a record year for its cargo business with the world in the grips of a supply-chain crisis that threatens to leave store shelves empty for this year’s holiday shopping.
“Just as in previous quarters, our cargo operation again delivered a record quarter for United,” Andrew Nocella, chief commercial officer at United (Nasdaq: UAL) said on this week’s earnings call. “It was the best third quarter on record.”
The carrier’s total cargo revenue in the third quarter was up 84% from 2019. United converted some flights to all cargo to cope with steep drops in travel demand during the pandemic. Most were converted back this year on the expectation of a rapid recovery in passenger numbers, but the all-cargo flights resumed as the Delta variant emerged in recent weeks. The all cargo flights are expected to end in the months ahead, but demand for airfreight is expected to remain elevated.
“We expect that to continue well into the fourth quarter and actually beyond, given where the country stands in terms of backups in ports, but also in terms of consumer demand,” Nocella said. “We’re transporting things by airplane today that we traditionally have not. We expect that to continue well into next year if not all of next year.” 
Backups at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach — the twin behemoths that dominate West Coast shipping transportation — have led to long delays or unavailability of a wide range of goods. On a typical day, dozens of ships float patiently outside the Port of Los Angeles, waiting for a chance to dock and unload cargo.
One sector hopes to turn cargo flights into airlift for the sake of fashion.
“We are prioritizing our key holiday styles and using air freight as needed,” Harmit Singh, chief financial officer of San Francisco’s Levi Strauss & Co., said on the earnings call this month. Higher air freight costs pressured the company’s gross margin in the latest quarter and is expected to do so in the fourth quarter too. “Right now, the headwind is air freight,” Singh said.
For now, Levi Strauss (NYSE: LEVI) said it isn’t passing the higher air freight costs on to retailers.
Another fashion icon is also turning to air cargo — the Colorado maker of Crocs shoes.
“We’re going to use quite a lot of air freight to bring goods in expedited fashion. That’s actually  going to cost us quite a bit of money,” Crocs CEO Andrew Rees told Fox Business News’ Stuart Varney on Friday. 
Rees said Crocs (Nasdaq; CROX) plans to spend $75 million as it “aggressively” turns to airfreight to prepare for the 2022 spring summer selling season. That’s about nine times more money than Crocs typically spends on airfreight in a quarter, according to company CFO Ann Mehlman.
“We are planning to reduce our dependency on West Coast ports by adding East Coast trans-shipment capabilities to reach our major U.S. customers,” Rees said.
